Jean-Marc Burgaud was recently dubbed ‘Monsieur Côte du Py’ by Bourgogne Aujourd’hui magazine. His fine domaine has seven hectares of vineyard on the Côte du Py in Morgon, making the Burgaud family the biggest owner of vines on this famous hill. Jean -Marc is originally from Lantignié and his wife, Christine, is from Morgon, the 11.5 hectares in Morgon were inherited from her side of the family. “My father used to tell me that Lantignié produced the best Beaujolais, but when I first met Christine, her father opened a 20-plus-year-old bottle of Côte du Py for me and that opened my eyes to the potential of Beaujolais,” he explains. Today, the domaine has 18 hectares of vineyards across Beaujolais Villages, Morgon and Régnié.
The Chardonnay for Jean-Marc’s Beaujolais villages Blanc comes from a one-hectare site on clay soil in Lantignié. The Gamay previously planted here didn’t produce the sort of wines he was looking for, he decided it would be better suited to Chardonnay so in 2010 replanted the vineyard.
As in much of France, the early months of 2018 were deluged with rain showers. Much of Beaujolais experienced its highest humidity levels since 1964. This moisture increased the risk of disease and spread of mildew. Fortunately, a warm, dry summer followed which alleviated this pressure. The rain which fell during the winter provided ample water-supply for the vines. Conditions during harvest were ideal, and 2018 produced a good quantity of healthy, ripe Gamay grapes. 2018 for producers in the Beaujolais is heralded as one of the best for quality and quantity in recent years.
Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation was blocked so as to retain freshness. The wine remained in tank until it was bottled, no oak was used in order to showcase the purity of fruit.
TASTING NOTESThis unoaked Beaujolais Blanc is expressive with notes of citrus and stone fruits on the nose. The palate is bright and lively with racy acidity giving this wine wonderful freshness.
