Clos des Fous is an exciting project between four Chilean friends: Pedro Parra (the viticulturalist), François Massoc and Paco Leyton (the winemakers), and Albert Cussen, who looks after the business. 'Fous' is the French word for 'crazy men', a reference to what their peers described as their 'craziness' in crossing the traditional vineyard boundaries of Chile to source grapes from vineyards in the extreme conditions further south and east. Pedro is credited with discovering many of the top vineyard sites across Chile, as well as revolutionising the way in which iconic wineries, such as Montes plant and manage their vineyards. The winery is based in Maule, to the south of the main vineyard area, where the 'Fous' make an enviable range of top quality varietal wines.
Arenaria comes from vineyards in Pucalán, located eight kilometers from the sea in Aconcagua Costa. Vines are planted on ancient palezoic soils made up of deposits of marine creatures that have become rock arenaria. The soil has low fertility with a clay surface. The Pucalán vineyard consists of four hectares planted with a density of 10,000 plants per hectare. Pucalán is one of the first 100% Chilean vineyards planted with clonal material from Burgundy (including clones from Vosne-Romanée and Gevréy Chambertin).
The 2014 vintage saw a difficult start due to a widespread frost in mid-September, which reduced production. However, the resulting low yielding vines produced more concentrated grapes. Most of Chile experienced good climatic conditions for a long and dry ripening season.
Grapes were hand harvested and transported to the winery. The wine was fermented slowly in large cement vats and was then aged for 18 months in new French oak. The wood for the barrels was sourced from the Vosges in Alsace and the barrels prepared at the winery.
The nose is highly aromatic with notes of cherry, raspberry and chamomile coupled with an earthy granite character. The flavours on the palate are consistent with vibrant red fruit, refreshing acidity and a more savoury character on the finish.
