Bodega Colomé was established in 1831 and is the oldest working winery in Argentina with one of the world’s highest vineyards. The winery is in the far north of Argentina in the Upper Calchaquí Valley and is thought to have been founded by the Spanish Governor of Salta, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. Today, the winery has 140 hectares of biodynamically run vineyard and at a staggering 3,111 metres above sea level, the ‘Altura Máxima’ vineyard is one of the world’s highest and represents viticulture at its most extreme. Grapes grown at such high altitude develop very thick skins to protect themselves from the sun’s intense ultraviolet rays. As a result, the wines have more colour, aroma, flavours and antioxidants from the increased phenolics.
At a staggering 3,111 metres above sea level, the ‘Altura Máxima’ vineyard, located in the Payogasta area of Salta, is one of the world’s highest and represents viticulture at its most extreme. Despite Hess being labelled “loco” (mad) by many for even contemplating such a feat, he acquired the land and planted there in 2004. The team created a dirt track through the wild and remote scrubland to reach the previously inaccessible vineyard. The extreme conditions proved too challenging in the early years, but fortune favoured the brave, and in 2012 they proved that the impossible was possible and released their first wine from this vineyard. The ‘Altura Máxima’ Pinot Noir is sourced from three different plots in the vineyard.
Overall, the Calchaquí Valley enjoyed optimal conditions in 2017. The weather during the growing season was excellent, with no spring frost, allowing good fruit set and resulting in healthy grapes.
The grapes were hand-harvested before further sorting at the winery. The fruit was fermented using natural yeasts in small, stainless-steel tanks with daily punch-downs for 15 days. The wine was then aged in used French oak barrels for almost 12 months.
This Pinot Noir is very perfumed with red fruits, spices and floral notes on the nose. The palate is complex with fresh acidity and good tannic structure,
