New to our list this year is Domaine de Bréseyme, which Nicolas Jaboulet of Maison and Domaines Les Alexandrins acquired in 2018. Located in the region of Brézème, from which the domaine takes its name, this up and coming area sits at the southernmost edge of the northern Rhône Valley. Founded in 1999 by the Gresse family, the domaine currently cultivates four hectares, with a further 12 hectares still to be planted. Nicolas is very enthusiastic about this new project and believes “this forgotten terroir in the north of the Rhône Valley deserves as much attention as its illustrious neighbours”.
Classified as Côtes du Rhône since 1937, Brézème has recently been taking steps to obtain ‘Cru’ status. Domaine de Bréseyme have four hectares split between 'Brézème Est' and 'Brézème Ouest' lieux-dits. The Côtes du Rhône Rouge is made from 100% Syrah. The vines grow on steep south-facing slopes and limestone, clay and pebble soil.
2016 has been hailed as a great vintage but it wasn’t without its challenges. The growing season did not get off to a great start. Spring was marked by cloudy and wet weather. Hail storms also posed a threat with some loss of yield yet luckily it was early enough in the season for vines to recover vegetative growth. As a result, flowering and budburst were delayed. The summer months were very hot and dry which halted some ripening but welcome rain fell at the beginning of September. Fortunately, good weather then resumed until harvest, which resulted in good quality fruit and moderate alcohol levels.
The Brézème Côtes du Rhône Rouge was 100% whole-bunch fermented in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged for 15 months in two and three year-old barrels before blending and bottling.
The Brézème Côtes du Rhône Rouge boasts concentrated flavours of blackcurrants, bramble and black pepper, with floral notes from the whole-bunch fermentation. On the palate, the concentrated flavours are well-balanced with bright acidity and firm tannins on the palate.
