PRODUCER

Founded in 1952, with the production of the first ever vintage of Barca Velha, Casa Ferreirinha pioneered the quality revolution in Douro still wines and was the first producer in the region dedicated entirely to producing wine, rather than port. Named after the legendary Porto matriarch Dona Antónia Ferreira, Casa Ferreirinha, pays homage to the memory of this visionary woman. Today, the winemaking is headed up by Luís Sottomayor, who restrains the Douro’s natural exuberance to produce wines that have a vibrant freshness allied to a lovely texture and depth.

VINEYARDS

A blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão and Tinta Roriz grown on the 160-hectare Quinta da Leda estate. Quinta da Leda is located in the far eastern reaches of the Douro Superior, just 12 kilometres from the border with Spain. The vineyards are planted on rolling hills on the south bank of the Douro and are a complex patchwork of plots with different aspects and microclimates, each matched to a specific grape variety following a study that was carried out in collaboration with the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro de Vila Real. Soils are composed predominantly of schist, which fractures vertically and allows the vine roots to delve deep to access water and nutrients during the hot Douro summers.

VINTAGE

2016 will go down in history as a top-quality vintage. A cool and rainy spring contributed to some issues with flowering and fruit set and resulted in lower yields. However, a mild summer with cool nights rescued the vintage and allowed for a perfectly paced slow ripening. The grapes harvested were of excellent quality with great intensity of flavour balanced by a vibrant natural acidity.

VINIFICATION

Made at the state-of-the-art Quinta da Leda winery, the varieties were vinified separately and blended post fermentation. After full destemming, the grapes were gently crushed before being transferred to stainless-steel tanks and granite “lagares” for maceration and fermentation. Following fermentation, the wines were transported to cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia where they were matured for 18 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, 50% of which were new. After numerous tastings and analysis, the final blend was assembled by Luís Sottomayor and the winemaking team and was lightly filtered before bottling.

TASTING NOTES

A wine of great complexity and elegance. On the nose, aromas of ripe red and black fruit combine with spicy notes of cedar and tobacco box and a subtle slate-like minerality. Full-bodied on the palate, with velvety tannins and a vibrant acidity which carries the complex flavours onto the lingering and harmonious finish.
