Château Fleur de Lisse, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

4 In Stock

Château Fleur de Lisse is located in Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse in SaintÉmilion. Owned by the Minvielle family from 1940 to 2015, the Château was acquired in 2015 by the Teycheney family, who have a particular interest in biodynamic farming. The property’s 8.66 hectares of vineyard are currently midway through the organic and biodynamic certification process.

The vines have an average age of 45 years. They lie on a rocky outcrop of calcareous silt soil, which encourages the roots to dig deep to access water and nutrients, giving the finished wines excellent freshness and acidity. Winemaker Nicolas Géré, who worked with Jean-Louis Chave before returning to Bordeaux, is uncompromising in his search for purity and elegance in the fruit. With a strong belief in the transition to biodynamic farming, Nicolas and his team have helped to restore the ecosystem in the vineyards by using highly effective growing techniques, and placing beehives and chickens among the vines.

2016 is one of the most exciting vintages in Bordeaux in recent memory. After big blockbuster vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010, this is a return to what the Bordelais do best: producing wine with power, concentration and freshness. In St Emilion, the warm and dry weather enabled Cabernet Franc to ripen perfectly, producing wines with elegance, glorious ripe red fruit, silky tannins, and lower alcohol than in previous years. Freshness and immediate appeal are the hallmarks of the 2016 vintage, which will delight lovers of traditional Bordeaux.

Château Fleur de Lisse is a blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 49% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vinification is overseen by consultant winemaker Jean Claude Berrouet, who is also the consultant at Château Pétrus. The grapes are harvested by hand, while sorting is done both before and after destemming. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled concrete vats for two to four weeks at a temperature between 28 and 30°C. The wine is then aged for 18 months in a combination of concrete vats and 20% new French oak.

The wine shows notes of vibrant red berries, blackberry fruit and liquorice spice, underpinned by elegant, fine-grained tannins and a lingering, fresh finish.
